Gratifying Friendships

Best Buddies New Mexico

I see you
As a program manager with Best Buddies, I often get asked on a daily basis if I enjoy my job. I am always quick to respond with extreme enthusiasm, “I love my job!” I could sit here and write countless reason why this is the most rewarding job in the world, but it all boils down to the little moments I hear about our participants shining and the friendship blooming. Best Buddies often refer to these moments as “I see you” moments, which come from a South African custom about the importance of acknowledging others as our equals and friends.

While at Eldorado High School I was shown a note from the parent of Charlie, a Buddy from Ms. Garcia (Special Education Advisor) classroom:

Amanda, Charlie’s Best Buddy, showed up at Special Olympics Bowling Regional Tournament at the perfect time. He had to bowl a third game and was getting tired. He crossed his arms, scrunched up his face, and then, Amanda walked in. Charlie’s frown was replaced by a smile from ear-to-ear. He leaped up from his chair and was happy to show off for Amanda. She was great; she talked with him and encouraged him. All the other male bowlers were jealous! Charlie was thrilled. It was so nice of Amanda to come.

Charlie and Amanda have been paired up sense August and have developed a picture perfect friendship. It is moments like these that remind us of the beauty of friendship. It is through our friends that we better understand our strengths and learn how to surpass our fears. Our friends are the driving force behind making us feel included and a part of society.

It is because of the friendships established by Best Buddies that millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have had the opportunity to experience one of the most magical and often undervalued gifts in the world.

This holiday season I would like to thank the participants who have taken a stand to make a difference, simply buy making a new friend! You have given me new hope for the future and made an impact in my life.
